Lawyer Jobs in Dubai and the Middle East

A legal career in the Middle East offers something that few other markets can match. International law firms in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh and Doha are working on complex, high-value matters across some of the world's most active commercial and infrastructure markets. If you are a qualified lawyer with the right experience and you are thinking about your next move, this is a market worth taking seriously.

Barratt Galvin has been placing lawyers into international law firms across the Middle East for more than a decade. We work with a close network of firms across the region and we hear about mandates before they are widely advertised. The best time to register with us is before you are actively looking. Every time a new role comes in, the first place we look is our existing network. If we already know you, we are giving you first access to opportunities that are not even advertised.

Why Register With Barratt Galvin

Lawyer recruitment in the Middle East moves through relationships and reputation. Firms in this market are selective, the talent pool is relatively contained and the best roles tend to go to candidates who are already known to the right people. When you register with us, you become part of a network that firms across the region already trust and turn to when they need to hire.

We take the time to understand your practice area, your seniority level, your career ambitions and what the right opportunity looks like for you. When we put your name forward to a firm, we do not just send your CV. We brief the firm on your experience, your track record and why we believe you are well suited to their team and culture. That level of representation makes a real difference in a market where fit matters as much as credentials.

We are also straight with you about what is realistic. The Middle East legal market has its own dynamics and not every profile is right for every firm or timing. We will give you an honest read on where your experience sits in the current market, what firms are actively hiring and what your options genuinely look like. If the timing is not right, we will tell you that too and keep you in mind for when it is.

Many of the lawyers we work with come back to us at each stage of their career, from their first international move through to more senior appointments. That long-term relationship is something we value and it shapes how we approach every conversation.

Are You the Right Fit

International law firms in the Middle East recruit qualified lawyers with common law experience. Firms in the region lean strongly toward candidates who have trained and practised in the UK, Australia, New Zealand or Singapore, as these jurisdictions produce the common law foundation and international firm standards that Middle East practices are built on. If your qualification and experience sit within one of these markets, you are well positioned for the conversation.

Beyond qualification, the calibre of the firms you have worked at matters enormously. In most cases, firms recruiting in the Middle East are looking for lawyers who have come from a Tier 1 firm in their practice area, ideally with international exposure and experience working on complex, cross-border or high-value matters. A strong track record at a reputable international firm is not just preferred, it is typically the baseline expectation. If your experience has been built at that level, you are the profile these firms are looking for.

Beyond credentials, firms look for candidates who are commercially sharp, client-focused and genuinely comfortable working in a demanding international environment. The ability to work effectively within a multicultural team and alongside clients from a wide range of backgrounds is equally important.

Most roles we place are at Associate and Senior Associate level, where the volume of hiring across the region is strongest. We also work on Of Counsel appointments. Partner level mandates are handled on a case by case basis when the right opportunity arises.

Where the Roles Are

We recruit for international law firms across the Middle East, with the strongest volume of roles in:

  • Dubai, including the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC)
  • Abu Dhabi, including Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM)
  • Riyadh
  • Doha

We also place legal support professionals in Australia and London for candidates who are considering a move or returning home. If you are open to more than one market, let us know and we will keep you in mind across all of them.

Making the Move to the Middle East

The Middle East legal market has matured considerably and international law firms across the region now have access to a strong pool of locally based talent. For most roles, firms will look to that local market first. However, when the right candidate is not available locally, firms do look abroad and international hires remain a genuine and established part of how these firms build their teams. The jurisdictions we see the most successful relocations from are the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore.

The candidates who make the most successful moves bring a combination of strong academics, top-tier or international law firm experience and a consistent employment history that demonstrates commitment and progression. Firms in this market place significant weight on stability. A CV that shows considered career moves and sustained tenure at each firm tells a story of reliability and dedication that partners genuinely value. Candidates who have moved frequently between roles, without clear progression or reason, tend to find it harder to secure an offer in this market.

If you have the right credentials, a track record that reflects genuine career development and you are seriously open to the region, get in touch and we will give you an honest picture of where your profile sits.

We also provide practical support for lawyers relocating to the region. We will give you an honest briefing on what life and work in the Middle East actually involves, make introductions to people in our network who can help you settle in and point you toward communities that will make the move feel less daunting. Getting the right start makes a real difference.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How does the process work when I register with Barratt Galvin?

The first step is a meeting with us via Microsoft Teams. Once you get in touch and share your CV, we will arrange a time to connect properly. We want to understand your practice area, your experience level, the kinds of matters you have worked on and what you are looking for in your next role. From there, we will brief you on any live roles that may be a match, or keep you in mind as new mandates come in. We will never put your name forward without speaking to you first.

  • Does my qualification need to be from a common law jurisdiction?

Yes. International law firms in the Middle East require common law qualifications and experience. The jurisdictions that firms lean toward most strongly are the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore, as these reflect the common law tradition that underpins the work these firms do in the region. If you hold a qualification from one of these jurisdictions and have trained at a reputable firm, you are well placed to explore opportunities in the Middle East.

  • I am currently based in the Middle East. Do you work with locally based lawyers as well?

Yes, and locally based candidates are generally preferred for most roles. If you are already practising in the region, you have a genuine advantage. You understand the market, the culture and the pace of working in an international law firm in the Gulf, and firms value that. Get in touch and we will give you a current read on what is available and where your profile fits best.

  • What level of post-qualification experience do firms typically look for?

It varies by role and practice area, but most firms recruiting at Associate level in the Middle East look for a minimum of two to four years of post-qualification experience at a Tier 1 or leading international firm in their practice area. At Senior Associate level, firms typically want five or more years of solid experience with evidence of growing responsibility, client-facing work and ideally some international exposure. For Of Counsel appointments, requirements vary depending on the firm and the mandate. Partner level mandates are handled on a case by case basis. Across all levels, the quality and complexity of the matters you have worked on will be scrutinised as closely as your years of experience.

  • Do you recruit across all practice areas or only specific ones?

Our primary practice areas are Corporate Advisory, Banking and Finance, Commercial Litigation, International Arbitration and Dispute Resolution, Projects and Energy, Construction and Real Estate. These are the areas where we have the deepest relationships and the most consistent flow of mandates. From time to time we also work across other disciplines depending on what our clients need, so even if your specialism is not on that list it is worth reaching out.

  • Do you work with candidates looking for roles in Australia or London as well?

I am a New Zealand qualified lawyer. Can you help me find a role in Australia?

  • What is the lifestyle like for lawyers working in Dubai or Abu Dhabi?

Dubai and Abu Dhabi offer a genuinely compelling lifestyle for international lawyers. Tax-free salaries, high-quality accommodation, excellent connectivity for international travel and a vibrant expat community are all part of the picture. The pace of work in international law firms in the region is demanding, as it is anywhere at this level, but the rewards are real. We are happy to share a candid view of what day-to-day life looks like based on the feedback we get from candidates we have placed over nearly two decades.
